QUICK SCREENING CAROTID SCAN

Carlton Cardiology has recently begun performing Quick Screening Carotid Scans for our patients.  According to the 29th International stroke conference, "A 4 minute screening can prevent most strokes."

What is a Quick Screening Carotid Scan and why is it important?

A Quick Screening Carotid Scan is a simple ultrasound scan of your carotid (neck) arteries that can, within moments, identify the presence of disease in the blood vessels, which can lead to hardening of the arteries.  The information you receive from this scan could provide you and your doctor with the opportunity to intervene early with medication and lifestyle change.

How do I know if this test will benefit me?

You may benefit from this screening if any of the following applies to you:

  • Age 65 or older
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking history
  • Family history of stroke or heart attack

What can I expect during this screening?

As mentioned above, this screening is simple and we make it even easier for you.  There is no appointment necessary so you can have it done when it is convenient for you.  There is no need to undress and the whole process only takes about 4 minutes.  While most screenings are not covered by Medicare and other insurance plans, as a service to our patients, we offer the Quick Carotid Scan for a nominal fee of $20.00, unlike most other places who can charge over $45.00.  So with a small fee and about 5 minutes of your time, you leave with the ability to reduce your risk of stroke and heart attack.
